ABOUT ABOUT

Sound It Out presents its first show in Brooklyn!

Fay Victor leads an all-star band in her vocal re-creations of music by the great, unsung bop-era pianist-composer Herbie Nichols. It was a house-rocking show when Sound It Out presented Fay and company at Greenwich House in December. Don't miss this encore performance in Brooklyn!

Fay Victor - voice
Michaël Attias, alto and baritone saxophones
Anthony Coleman - piano
Ratzo Harris - double-bass
Michael Sarin - drums

About Herbie Nichols Sung, Fay says: “I’ve been working with Herbie Nichols’ music for well over a decade – I’m madly in love with it. His is joyous, irresistible music, even if it has been sadly underplayed. There are scholarly approaches to his pieces, but our way is to open up the forms and really get that joyousness across. I wrote the lyrics to all the tunes, except for Billie Holiday's to ‘Lady Sings the Blues,’ with the words coming out of the music itself and my response to it. The way the band plays is sensitive and open but with a real muscularity and intensity. I hope people aren’t intimidated if they don’t know the music or even the name of Herbie Nichols – I want them to come dig the music and leave having been taken by the beauty of the melodies and their singability. I want people to fall in love with Herbie Nichols like I have.”

"The voice is the most beautiful instrument of all." - Herbie Nichols

Sound It Out
Sound It Out, a progressive jazz concert series launched in June 2012 by series producer Bradley Bambarger, has won affection among critics and aficionados over the course of some 65 shows so far at its wonderfully intimate, acoustically perfect home hall at the Greenwich House Music School in the West Village. The New York Times has called Sound It Out “reliably rewarding… a beacon of adventurous programming,” while Time Out New York has described the concert series as “exemplary… one of the sharper jazz series in town.” See below for a list of past performers and a current concert schedule. Sound It Out is now expanding with this initial concert at the Brooklyn Conservatory, with more exciting shows are being added – go to www.facebook.com/sounditoutnyc.
