NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston will discuss his new autobiography AFRICAN RHYTHMS in a Q&A with Brooklyn-born writer Shannon J. Effinger.
For well over six decades, Weston has been one of the true innovators of modern jazz. Combining influences of his heroes (Ellington, Tatum & his chief one Monk) with the vast rhythmic sounds of Africa, Weston has created a unique hybrid that would shape legions of jazz musicians to come. From his rich upbringing in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, to his unprecedented travels all over Africa (one of the first artists in the US to do so), Weston channeled those experiences into now seminal classics like African Cookbook (1964), Berkshire Blues (1965) & The Healers (1980). At 89, he shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to tour all over the world. His latest release, The Roots Of The Blues (Sunnyside Records), reunited him with tenor saxophonist Billy Harper.
Pianist and composer Sharp Radway was chosen by Weston personally to perform a solo piano concert at this event in his honor.
A book signing will conclude the event. Copies of artists' books and CDs will be available for sale on the night of the event.
